The mother of Chit Min Thu mourns and flashes a three-finger salute at his home in Yangon, Myanmar on 11 March 2021. Chit Min Thu was fatally shot in the head by security forces during a protest against the military coup. Protests against the coup, staged by the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Army), have been ongoing throughout Myanmar since the military overthrew the elected government on 1st February 2021. The protests have been met with force by the Tatmadaw, leading to the deaths of hundreds of protestors and the imprisonment of thousands of politicians, activists, journalists and other civilians.
Myay Ni Gone is a Burmese photojournalist with experience covering a wide range of political and social stories and events throughout Myanmar for local publications and international organisations. Since the military coup in Myanmar Myay Ni Gone has been working freelance, covering the popular uprising in the country and the subsequent social and economic fallout. Due to the political situation in Myanmar the name Myay Ni Gone is an alias and this bio has been heavily redacted to remove any identifying information.
